General comments on this installation.

This is the Linux scisoft collection for Redhat 6.n.
The file PACKAGES contains a list of what is included here.

This file contains a few comments about building problems etc.
The average user can ignore what is written here.

History:

Firstly there was a minor problem with the IRAF installation script
in /scisoft/iraf/iraf/unix/hlib/install - a syntax error which is also
noted on the IRAF web pages.

Secondly the installation of xephem required Motif and hence the "lesstif"
system was installed from the Web. This was only needed for building,
not running, xephem.

On Paranal, 8th March 2000, this system was installed as a test on
Redhat 6.0 workstation called jabba.pl.eso.org. MIDAS 99NOV pl2.0 and
IDL 5.3 were added.

The /scisoft/mirror/mirror file was modified slightly so that it only
copies files more than a day old to avoid false copies of files with
slightly erroneous time stamps.

On La Silla a few different problems were encountered:

Firstly there is a problem with different versions of MIDAS - typically
one in the VLT standard software installation and also one here in
/scisoft. The Setup.csh file has been modified to use the system installed
in /midas (which may or may not be the /scisoft one) and also to look
for the most recent version.

Also a funny problem with ximtool-alt (and ximtool-magwas noted and the files
were modified very slightly so that the first line had
the #!/bin/csh in it, not the line at the end of the comment block.
Also corrected the title of XIMTOOL-MAG.
