To change the default colormap to the AIPS TVFIDDLE colormap and select it for the next mapplot: 0>mapcolor aips Mapplot colormap: aips, contrast: 1 brightness: 0.5. 0> PARAMETERS ---------- type - The type of colormap to use, selected from: none - Turn off psuedo-color plotting. grey - Use a grey-scale ramp [initial default]. color - Use the default RGB colormap. aips - The AIPS TVFIDDLE colormap. heat - Flame colored colormap. ramp - This is a three ramp colormap, based on one in Iraf's ximtool. red - Red ramp. green - Green ramp. blue - Blue ramp. brightness - The brightness of the color bar between 0 and 1. With the gray-scale colormap, the image will be completely black for brightness <= 0, and completely white at brightness >= 1. The initial default is 0.5, which places the center of the colormap at the center of the color bar. contrast - The contrast of the colormap, expressed as the reciprocal of the width of the colormap on the displayed color bar. The initial default of 1.0 spreads the colormap over the length of the color bar. Higher contrasts compress the colormap, while lower contrasts expand it. CONTEXT ------- Mapplot can display maps using contours, and/or grey-scale or psuedo-color. The colormap command provides a means of selecting these options prior to running mapplot. There are three classes of colormap that you can choose: none - This turns off grey-scale and color plotting entirely. grey - This selects the default grey-scale colormap. color - All colormaps except those named above, are of class 'color'. Specifying 'color' to the colormap command selects the last colormap of class 'color' that was previously selected. Thus after selecting 'aips' once, either interactively in 'mapplot', or via the mapcolor command, and then subsequent requests for 'color' install the 'aips' colormap. Other 'color' color-maps are listed above under the explanation of the 'type' argument. You also have the option of specifying how the colormap will be mapped onto the mapplot image intensity. By default, the contrast is set to 1 and the brightness to 0.5. This fits the colormap exactly within the color bar plotted under the mapplot image. The center of the colormap can be moved up or down the color bar by changing the colormap brightness. This is best done interactively in mapplot, but can also be set on the command line with the mapcolor command. The width of the colormap compared to that of the color bar can also be changed by altering the contrast. High contrast equates to a colormap that occupies only a small fraction of the color bar. Low contrast equates to a colormap extent that exceeds the width of the color bar, such that only a small range of its colors are visible. Negative contrasts act the same as positive contrasts except that the colormap is reversed. Again, the contrast is best set interactively in mapplot, but can be preset with the 'mapcolor' command. Note that to completely flip the sense of a color map you should first run the mapcolor command without arguments, to see what the current brightness and contrast are. Then run the mapcolor command and substitute -contrast for the original contrast, and 1-brightness for the original brightness. To see what the current colormap settings are, invoke the colormap command with no arguments. Note that changes to the colormap selection, brightness and contrast within mapplot remain in place after you exit mapplot. It is thus possible to set these parameters interactively in mapplot for subsequent mapplot plots. In particular, this is invaluable for making hard copies in color after setting the desired colors on an interactive device. Also see 'help mapfunc' for details on how to specify the transfer function and data range to plot. Limitations ----------- When using this command note that: 1. Some devices are not capable of displaying color. In such cases RGB colormap types will be translated into grey-levels. This is device dependant and the results may not be what you expect. 2. Some devices can't even display different levels of grey. On such devices a random-stipple pattern is used to simulate different grey-levels. 3. If you are using an old version of PGPLOT that does not have the PGIMAG call, then only grey-scale colormaps are generally available on hard-copy devices.
