function, vmin, vmax Change the transfer function and data range displayed in mapplot. EXAMPLES -------- To select a linear transfer function: 0>mapfunc linear Mapplot transfer-function = linear, Data range = data min -> data max. 0> To select a logarithmic transfer function, and limit the range of fluxes displayed: 0>mapfunc log, peak(flux, min), peak(flux,max)/2 Mapplot transfer-function = log, Data range = -0.103472 -> 0.162955 Jy. 0> To select the whole available data range: 0>mapfunc linear,0,0 Mapplot transfer-function = linear, Data range = data min -> data max. 0> PARAMETERS ---------- function - The transfer function to use, selected from: linear - Linear transfer function. log - Logarithmic transfer function. sqrt - Square-root transfer function. vmin - The minimum map intensity to be plotted (Jy). vmax - The maximum map intensity to be plotted (Jy). To select the whole data range, set vmin and vmax both to zero. CONTEXT ------- Mapplot displays images using contours and/or grey-scale/psuedo-color plots. When grey-scale or psuedo-color are selected (see help mapcolor), mapplot defaults to mapping the whole range of data in the map or beam, linearly onto the current colormap. In high dynamic range images with bright features this has the tendency of making low brightness features difficult to see. In such cases it is often advantageous to take the log or square root of the image values, and/or reduce the maximum intensity plotted. The 'mapfunc' command allows one to do this. Note that mapplot also allows one to interactively change the transfer function (but not the data range). Also note that older versions of PGPLOT did not allow one to change the transfer function, and if you are using such a version, all transfer functions will appear linear. RELATED COMMANDS ---------------- mapplot - Display map and beam images. mapcolor - Change the colormap, brightness and contrast used in mapplot. xyrange - Set the boundaries of the sub-image to be displayed in mapplot. loglevs - Set logarithmic contour levels for use in 'mapplot'. beamloc - Change when and where mapplot plots the clean beam ellipse.
