A line such as the following should be added to the .login file: setenv UPARM /home//uparm/ For example, if user freddy normally starts IRAF from her Iraf subdirectory, so that her uparm directory is a subdirectory of /home/freddy/Iraf, she would set her @b environment variable like this: setenv UPARM /home/freddy/Iraf/uparm/ Note that the trailing "/" is required. You can now type the command "assist" to bring up the ASSIST program. However, we recommend that you spend a few minutes tailoring the ASSIST to your own needs to make easier the use of your analysis tools. For example, you can maintain your favorite IRAF tasks at the top ASSIST tree and access them directly without having to navigate the IRAF tree. This is done by adding task names to the user.tasks file in your uparm directory. You can also tailor ASSIST by means of X11 resources. For example, you can change the color of the windows or the columns displayed by the parameter editor. To learn more about how to tailor the ASSIST: @button
