The string is taken to be the rest of the line up to a carriage return (which may be written explicitly as \n). The macro @code{echo} is usually used as an abbreviation for this command. WRITE @code{WORD} is similar, except that the string is written to file @code{WORD}. If the filename is the same as the previous WRITE, or if you preface the filename with a @kbd{+}, the string is appended, otherwise the file is overwritten. @findex write, to a file @findex write, to the terminal @findex strings, printing formatted WRITE HISTORY @code{WORD}, writes macro @code{WORD} onto the end of the history list.
